Good King Wenceslas looked out ^*1

When the snow lay round about ^*3
Deep and crisp and even ^*4
Brightly shone the moon that night ^*5
Though the frost was cruel ^*6
When a poor man came in sight ^*7
Gath'ring winter fuel ^*8

“Hither, page, and stand by me ^*9
If thou know'st it, telling ^*10
Yonder peasant, who is he? ^*11
Where and what his dwelling?” ^*12
“Sire, he lives a good league hence ^*13
Underneath the mountain ^*14
Right against the forest fence ^*15
By Saint Agnes' fountain.” ^*16

“Bring me flesh and bring me wine ^*17
Bring me pine logs hither ^*18
Thou and I shall see him dine ^*19
When we bear them thither.” ^*20
Page and monarch forth they went ^*21
Forth they went together ^*22
Through the rude wind's wild lament ^*23
And the bitter weather ^*24

“Sire, the night is darker now ^*25
And the wind blows stronger ^*26
Fails my heart, I know not how, ^*27
I can go no longer.” ^*28
“Mark my footsteps, my good page ^*29
Tread thou in them boldly ^*30
Thou shalt find the winter's rage ^*31
Freeze thy blood less coldly.” ^*32

In his master's steps he trod ^*33
Where the snow lay dinted ^*34
Heat was in the very sod ^*35
Which the Saint had printed ^*36
Therefore, Christian men, be sure ^*37
Wealth or rank possessing ^*38
Ye who now will bless the poor ^*39
Shall yourselves find blessing ^*40
