cheer up/on

  1. Presne tak. We also say “cheer for”, as I used in that thread – cheer for a team.
  2. My English is so mixed up from living here for so long and having so much influence from non-AmE speakers that I often can't tell you what's proper AmE anymore. But I think that's ok – I call my English “international English”. No one's going to give you the evil eye for mixing it up a little – it's a sign of a well-travelled person

A. I didn't read it properly because I accidentally added cheer up for the team, which wouldn't make sence. Cheer for a team is obviously correct.

B. I am totally fine with anybody mixing up AmE and BrE or any other for that matter but at the same time I am aware of the fact that while taking an English exam ( like FCE) you are not supposed to mix them up and you should strictly stick to the rules of either of them or you might end up getting lower grades (marks ) . But to me it is so encouraging to know that you as an american native speaker can't tell whether it is AmE or not:-).

Yes, the thing with the exams kind of bothers me. My daughter will be taking the FCE next year in 8th grade, and she had some small problems a couple weeks ago with the practice test for exactly the reasons you state. She learns BrE at school, speaks more or less AmE with me (with a few BrE-isms here and there), and her poor head is a mess.

She has to take it as part of the English curriculum at her school – she goes to Novy PORG. Yes, she will do well on it – and of course they WANT her to take it to increase the school's overall average score They will do CAE in another 3 years (I think).
